The Beginnings in Maryland - James Barnes

This family history of the Barnes family of Maryland was compiled by John Ezra Barnes in the 1940s and by his niece, Audrey Barnes Shane, in the 1960s.  The first six generations have been ammended by this blogger and the Sixth and Seventh generations added are solely the work of this blogger.  In future, stories will be written about individual family members.

Our Barnes family represents a direct line from James Barnes of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, first in records at the end of the 1600s. He most likely immigrated from England around 1670-1680, either with family or as an indentured servant. A James Barnes did arrive in Maryland on the "Cecelius" from Bristol/England in 1676 and this could be our progenator. Whoever James was, he married quite well. His wife, Keturah Shipley born around 1683 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland was the daughter of Adam Shipley and Lois Howard. James and Keturah were married before 1698 and had nine children between 1699 and June 1717, seven sons and two daughters.
We are descended from the second son, Adam Barnes (named for his grandfather Adam Shipley). The children were, in order of birth: Richard, Robert, Adam, James, Peter, Joshua, Ketura (who married Richard Shipley), Susanna and Nathan. It is possible that Richard was named for his Grandfather Barnes, however not proven. It is also possible that Susannah was named for her paternal grandmother, again not proven. There are baptism records for Susannah and Nathan. The other children are proven by their appearance in wills and land documents.

Hi Carolyn,

Interesting to read about your Barnes family. We have talked about this before. My John Barnes (6th ggf)was married in Plymouth Colony 4 Jan 1666 to Elizabeth Hedge of Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony.

I have no idea where he came from, or when and where he first arrived.

Carolyn,

Sure wish my friend's Barnes families were related to your families, however, they certainly are not.

It is very interesting reading about your families.

Hi Carolyn,
I found your information quite interesting. I descend from a Joshua Barnes (b. 1818) m. Rachel Cook (1818 - 1870). They had two children--Mary, and Upton (b. 1848) in the Gamber/New Windsor area of Carroll County, Maryland. I cannot locate Joshua's line, but only have the record of their marriage in Carroll County, MD April 15, 1847. Upton is my 2nd great grandfather. Don't know if you've every stumbled upon any info regarding him.
Thanks for reading.

Thank you for posting this very interesting information! I am descended from Susan Ann Barnes (>Moses>Dorsey>John>Adam) and John Greenbrier Kelley. Their daughter, Airy Elizabeth Kelley (m. Myron F. Strock) was my maternal great-grandmother's mother. This has helped me immensely with my lineage on this branch of my family.

Carolyn,
This is very well written. Thank you. My GG grandfather William Alexander Barnes was born in North Carolina abt 1822. He shows up in California gold rush. His descendants have lived mostly on the West Coast of USA.

I have matched my Barnes with autosomal DNA testing to the Barnes' of
Davidson County, North Carolina.
That was my brick wall until I Y-DNA tested my Barnes line and learned
we match descendants of James and Keturah (Shipley) Barnes. I believe
I descend from their first born son Richard.

We have at the moment one proven match to a family in Birmingham, England (Aston family name). They have a long history as miners just west of Birmingham.

Our Y-DNA shows we are R1b-L21 descendants. We arrived in Briton abt
2600 BCE .
